June 2005

On June 10th my daughter and I traveled to Mexico for the surgery.  The flight was just fine and Marcos picked us up with no problem. He was very nice and has a great sense of humor.  We stopped before crossing to get snacks and water. There was no problems with crossing. Marcos even drove us around to see the neighborhood before we went to the hospital. That was handy so later if we wanted to go anywhere during the day we would know the surroundings a bit better. At the hospital we received papers to fill out and Marcos helped with all of it. It was very simple. We were then shown to our room. The hospital is doing some renovation by the way, but was still simple and nice. They brought me a gown and blankets for the evening and that was set for the night.

I woke up the next morning and the nurse came in shortly to put the IV in.  I have very small veins and it is hard to get them in me and a few nurses looked before any tried and then finally one decided to do it and she got it first try. I was impressed! I barely had a bruise. Usually I am like a pin cushion from them trying. I really liked that they had a few nurses look and used the nurse that felt must comfortable doing it. We did have a tough time with communication but the nurses did a great job with gestures.  I would advise you to take some index cards with words on them that are helpful.  They do understand pain and simple words so it was not that bad. The surgery went well. I needed to fully be put under because of the scar tissue in my back from past back surgeries I had. I  woke up a little early and had a hard time breathing because of the tubes down my throat. The Doctor calmed me and told me to relax I was going to be ok. I do not remember much of that but I was fine.

I awoke to my bed in the room with my daughter singing a song to me I used to sing to her when she was a little child before bed. I could not yet respond to her well I was very groggy. She said I smiled though so she knew I was ok. My daughter was great support for us through all of this.  My husband could not come and she offered.  She is only 17.  I would not suggest any younger child to go with you.  She said she counted the min. and worried about me a lot. which is to be expected. It took around three hours though she said and she was expecting it to only be 2 at the most.  Make sure if you do take a child they know what to do if something goes wrong.  Who to call and how to get home.  The big question she had which is kind of interesting.  She said "What if something goes wrong and you die? Do I still pay them."  It made me laugh.  I did not have that answer.

Getting back to the surgery. I have 5 inches on one side and 4 on the other. I had my TL in January of 93.  The TR was done on the 11th of June.  Dr Levi said we have a great chance of conceiving.  I was ok with that without the percentage. He said no lifting even a broom for two weeks.  Stitches could come out in two weeks.  No sex for two weeks and do not try to conceive for two to three months.  Have the HSG after two to three months to help your chances but you do not have to. Also no stairs for two weeks or driving a car.  I hope that helps others who have all theses questions.  But it is hard to not do some of this. On the airplane alone there were stairs. They helped me up them very slowly and I held my stomach.  Remember the airlines will assist you all you have to do is tell them you just had surgery and need a wheel chair and assistance.

The return went smooth. We were stopped and asked a few questions that was it and we were off on our way. Every thing went well and I am grateful to the doctors, Marcos and the staff. And most grateful for my daughter for being my support. Well that's our story.
